ANTIQUE BATIK KAIN PANJANG
Very special early 20th-century hipcloth from Solo/Surakarta, Java.
Batik Tulis – i.e. completely drawn by hand! – in organic/natural dyes (indigo and soga).
Showing a repeating design of birds of paradise in a clump of bamboo. The beautifully subdued colour scheme is typical of batiks from Solo.
This type of hipcloth was worn by aristocracy and very wealthy traders. In fact, this piece was collected in Singapore and was very likely owned by a Straits Chinese (Nyonya) family.
Condition: this piece is spotless – in stunningly good condition, especially considering its age.
