Batik - Cotton - Yogya, Java, Indonesia

Description
Batik - Cotton - Yogya, Java, Indonesia
2nd half 19th century - Fair

Antique sarong from the 2nd half of the 19th century, from the Sultan's palace in Jogyakarta on Java. According to the Adat, sarongs with this batik pattern should only be worn by members of the Court. The sarong has hung under a Hindeloper coat rack since 1910. To this end, a piece of 1 square centimetre was cut out on a corner (see the photo). Furthermore, there are some traces of this improper use. In any case, the age can be determined. The sarong is - besides beautifully batik - also artfully woven, so that patterns of woven holes can be seen against the light (see photo 1, it was photographed in daylight) In short: a museum piece with some imperfections due to its improper use as a background of a coat rack for more than a hundred years. The sarong will be carefully packaged and sent by registered mail.
