Description
Textile (2) - Raphia - Velours de Kasai - Shoowa-Kuba - Congo
2nd half 20th century - Excellent

Lot of 2 beautiful Kuba Shoowa pieces of fabric from the first half of the 20th century.
Beautiful Shoowa fabric is an essential part of the KUBA tribal culture. This kind of fabric is extremely laborious because men are in charge of softening the palm fibres and weaving, while women are in charge of embroidery. The creation of a fabric takes between 4 and 6 months (!). Fascinating geometric designs always have a meaning; we can also find these patterns on the body scarification of KUBA men and women.
Shoowa fabric pieces are used as currency or for trade, they are also an essential part of the dowry.
Dimensions: 44.5 x 61.5 cm,
53 x 48 cm.
