Mme Guizot (Elisabeth-Charlotte-Pauline de Meulan), a French novelist and moralist, born in 1773, died in 1827. Lettres de famille sur l'éducation domestique (1825, 2 octavo volumes), in which she deals with the most difficult questions of philosophy and morals so as to bring them within the reach of young minds.
In this book, says Sainte-Beuve, she holds a sort of middle ground between Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Mme Necker de Saussure.
Everything she has written on education is excellent and reveals a spirit of the first order, whose vigour is balanced by a very feminine sensitivity; as a novelist, she knows how to convey interest, depth; she must be placed above Mme Cottin de Mme de Flahaut, her contemporaries, and only Mme de Staël is superior to her.
