Description
1 spear and 10 arrows (11) - Bamboo, limbum, hardwood tips, feathers - Berlinhafen, Aitape - New Guinea's north coast
1st half 20th century - Good

What we are offering here is a collection of arrows from Berlin Harbour, which is nowadays called Aitape. In the 1880s, Berlin Harbour was an important outpost of the New Guinea Company. Until the end of German colonial rule in 1914, there were lots of coconut plantations there. These arrows come without exception from an old German colonial collection. The spear was bought at a Dutch auction. The comparison photos are from the rare catalogue of Ludwig Biro: DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF THE ETHNOGRAPHIC COLLECTION OF LUDWIG BIROS FROM GERMAN NEW GUINEA (BERLIN HARBOUR). The dimensions refer to the spear (CENTRE).
