Description
Mask - Wood - dans le style Yupik
Early 21st century - Good

Anthropomorphic Mask
Carved in a piece of wood, painted with red, black and white. The feathers are arranged on a circular arch, a pair of horns is inserted on the head of the mask, whereas the bottom of the face depicts an upturned fish.

According to the Inuit, every living or inert thing owns an inua (named yua among the Yupiit), a spirit, a vital force, it literally means “its/his person”. Each inua is an entity which constantly comes back to life, often materialised in its human form, through diverse objects (masks, pieces of weapons, amulets).
