Henri Matchavariani (born in 1939) is a French painter, calligrapher, and illustrator of Georgian and Romanian descent. He was artistic director in Paris and in Milan. He has designed numerous illustrations for the press and for billboards, for example for Air France. He worked closely with Helmut Newton on an advertising project. His art is guided by the elegance of the line and by a flourished gesture inspired by the Orient.
"Just a few strokes, like an economy, as a strict necessity to the sign.
Just a few strokes like a shudder of pastel or ink in the silence of my white sheets.
Just a few strokes, and nothing else."
