Pablo Picasso was the first child of José Ruiz Blasco and María Picasso López. Traditionally, he received a number of saints-referring first names: Pablo, Diego, José, Francisco de Paula, Juan Nepomuceno, María de los Remedios, Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad. His two surnames are the first surname of his father (Ruiz) and the first surname of his mother (Picasso) in accordance with the Spanish name system. Curiously, he is known by his second surname Picasso and not as Ruiz.

Pablo Picasso's father was an artist, drawing teacher and curator. In 1884 his sister Dolores (Lola) was born and in 1887 his sister Concepción (Conchita).
