Sculpture - Clay, Silk, Wood, wax - Mid 18th century

Very special quality sculpture from 18th century depicting a man, most likely a saint (perhaps St. Louis). The figurine is made of fabric and straw, the hands and feet are in cold-dried clay, the head is made of wax with glass eyes (rare mixed and difficult to find technique), the base is in lacquered wood and it’s finely worked by hand. Actual clothes (pants) are in original silk of the time, while the upper part of the clothes has gone lost and replaced with a modern fabric.
Place and country of origin: Southern Italy.
Period: 1700.
Dimensions: approx. 56 x 25 x 16 cm.
