For centuries, the Via Appia has fascinated walkers, scholars, ordinary people and artists; few have resisted the desire to portray it, capture its image and immortalize its beauty.
The painting portrays precisely the landscape surrounding the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella as it was in the early 1900s, when this work was painted.
The Mausoleum dates back to the 1st century BC and is dedicated to the daughter of the Roman consul Quinto Cecilio Metello Cretico, Cecillia Metella.
