Gisela Klehn (Vienna 1877-1945), Two Expressionist costumes (±1923)
Mixed media of watercolour, gouache, pencil and silver paint, both 32.5 x 25 cm. In perfect condition, the paper is only in the extreme edge, far beyond the image, slightly yellowed. One of both is signed "Gisela Klehn" and titled "Apachin", the other is titled "Hampelmann".
Gisela Klehn was in the avant-garde circles of Vienna in the 1920s, at the time of Friedrich Kiesler's infamous "International Ausstellung neuer Theatertechnik" in 1924. Whether Klehn contributed to the "Costume Design" department of the exhibition at the Wiener Konzerthaus with these costume designs is unknown. Only big names like El-Lissitzky, Van Doesburg, Kurt Schwitters, Oskar Schlemmer and others can be found. The program also says "und viele Andere".
