In good vintage condition, a wonderful and special wooden plywood magazine / newspaper holder from the 1950s, produced by the Indian 'The Western India Plywoods Ltd' company.
The design is unique and has many details, please see all of the close-up photos. The photos show that there are slight inflections in the plywood, but these do not stand out.
The company still exists, but they hardly make utensils of plywood anymore, they do for the shipping and aviation industry however.
This magazine holder reminded us of the wine rack by Torsten Johansson (1917-1996) for Formträ AB.
Dimensions: Height: 35 cm x Width: 42 cm x Depth: 26 cm.
The Western India Plywoods Ltd is located in Baliapatam, Kerala in the south of India and was established in 1945. It started on a modest scale with the production of sawn timber and plywood with a few native and borrowed machines.
The company has made steady progress over the years to grow to its current status and is one of the largest wood-based industrial integrated complexes in the country and also in South East Asia, with 1,200 employees today.
The products ranged from plywood, blockboards, doors, furniture, formwork and plywood for ships and aircraft, etc. The manufacture of compacted wood initially started on a small scale as part of the plywood factory. In 1974, an industrial license was obtained for the production of compacted wood with a capacity of 2,000 tons per year.
Condition in accordance with age and use. Some tiny spots of damage on the plywood, and also some stains, scratches and spots of wear.
The photos provide an accurate impression of the lot on offer.
