Ancestor statue - Wood - Bateba - Lobi - Burkina Faso

Description
Ancestor statue - Wood - Bateba - Lobi - Burkina Faso
2nd half 20th century - Good

This Figurine named Bateba represents a woman. These "Bateba” are placed near domestic and family altars dedicated to the cult of the ancestors, over four generations.
The Lobi principle of perceiving and carving a subject in three parts, substantially equal, is respected in this case: a third for the head and neck, a third for the body and a third for the legs. The originality of this piece consists in the arms and very open legs, whereas the latter are closed most of the time.
The style is rough and flared.
Dense and hard wood.
Black, dry patina of wear.
