The French Legion of Fighters was established, in the not occupied area only, by a law of 29th August 1940. Under the presidency of Marshal Pétain, it is the single body that brings together all Veterans.
Its place is fixed in the ceremonies immediately after the military hierarchy. In each “département”, a departemental committee is elected by the presidents of the municipal sections
. In November 1940, meetings were held in each village to form the communal and area sections. They will be closed by the taking of oath to Pétain similar to the oath taken to Hitler in Germany.

Legionnaires' activities consist of sending parcels to war prisoners, helping their families, distributing biscuits to schoolchildren, and helping the children of refugee legionnaires. To finance these charity aids, numerous collections are organized, sales of almanacs, badges, shows, call to donations.
