‘Inwijding’ is the fourth novel published by Marcellus Emants (Voorburg, 1848 - Baden, 1923). According to the foreword, the text was written between September 1897 and December 1900. In this foreword, the writer explains that he wanted to reflect the thinking and actions of ‘some ordinary people’. He also points out that he adhered to the principles of the Association for the Simplification of the Written Language - which has resulted in a text that looks a lot more phonetic than our modern spelling.
The book was published in two volumes in May 1901 by the Haagsche Boekhandel- en Uitgevers-Maatschappij, in a beautiful cover by Johann Georg van Caspel, and had (416 + 360 =) 776 pages. The edition probably consisted of 500 copies.
The second edition appeared in an edition of 1000 copies in the same year (source: Ton van Anbeek)
