Netherlands - 2000-Present - Porcelain

Pearls of Makkum is a jewellery collection by fashion designer Alexander van Slobbe and the oldest company in the Netherlands: Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum (from 1572). After together making a series of porcelain knots and the lid for the perfume bottle of Van Slobbe's women's label orson + bodil, they came up with the idea of porcelain jewellery.

The first Pearls of Makkum were made in 2006: a collection of porcelain pearls in varying sizes and shapes and with different glazings and decorations which could be purchased separately or as a strung necklace.

In 2011, the series was expanded with the newest pearls and colours, inspired with the costume jewellery and especially the jewellery from the 1960s and 1970s. Three bright colours on a dark grey background, giving the new pearls an almost graphic appearance. This lot contains two half pearls coral with a diameter of 45 mm,

Packaging designed by Irma Boom, including manual with threading examples. Comes without string.

Part of the collection of i.a. Museum of Art & Design, New York, Design Museum Den Bosch, Centraal Museum Utrecht.
