Clay figures of Djenne are rare.
Djenne, 130 km south - west of the regional capital Mopti and about 570 km northeast of the capital Bamako - is one of the oldest cities in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Inhabited since 250 BC. Djenné developed into a market and became an important city for the trans-Saharan gold trade (fifteenth and sixteenth centuries).
Beautiful terracotta jug in reasonable condition, made with plenty of detail. The neck of the jug has been restored in the past.
