Square Chikwanda - African head, Shona-art

Description
Square Chikwanda - African head, Shona-art
Stone - Hand signed

This sculpture is made out of springstone, a hard serpentinestone from Zimbabwe. After working on the stone with chisels and rasps, the sculptor used sandpaper with a fine grid to finish the sculpture. The stone is mostly grey when finished; on 1 cheek there's some brown natural spots, which give this scultpture a nice touch. The inner-ear has got nicely carved lines.

Square Chikwanda is a Zimbabwean sculptor; he was first taught by his father at Tengenenge Art centre in Zimbabwe. His figures are generally very square and stylised : arms, legs and fingers are often square and show hard lines; noses have sharp edges.
