Statue(s) - Wood - KUSU HEMBA - Congo

Description
Statue(s) - Wood - KUSU HEMBA - Congo
1st half 20th century - Fair

Origin: Former prestigious collection, Sablon, Brussels.

The Kusu people were strongly influenced by the stylistic influence of their neighbours, the Hemba people. The Hemba and the Kusu peoples also created models of statuettes of the Kabeja genre with top containers.

This statuette is an object of power, the top of the head is hollowed in order to place ingredients of power. It would only be contained in an herbs packet when carried. Women and children must move away from it and men themselves cannot touch it under penalty of misfortune, and thus only handle it with a wand. The Kabeaj, and regardless of their ethnicity, preside over clan offerings and sacrifices.
