Very Rare and Beautiful Facial Mask from the southwest of the D.R Congo.
Initiation and circumcision mask from the Lulua of the D.R Congo, presenting a large frontal crest, topped by a central crest. 28 cm X 19 X 15.
Its function was to protect against evil curses during initiation sessions.
A net of braided strings facilitates the wearing of the mask.
Hardwood, wonderful patina of traces of age and tribal use.
Many curvilinear scarifications, characteristic of the Lulua, on the cheeks, forehead and temples.
With eyes in coffee beans, the mouth is slightly ajar.
This tradition of sculpture no longer exists for these very rare masks.
This mask comes from the collection of Mr. Gahzi Nouri Said (embassy attaché of Iran in Congo, between 1970-1979).
