Lighting maker Poul Henningsen completed his work on the PH 5 commuter in 1958, which in many ways became the highlight of his long career. Since then, PH 5 has been an icon of Danish design and a beloved lamp, which for generations has illuminated countless of dining tables throughout the world.
The lamp emits a 100% glare-free light. Poul Henningsen developed PH 5 in 1958 as a follow-up to his famous three-screen system. The luminaire emits both a downward and a sideways light and thus illuminates itself. In the PH 5 Classic, an internal red cone and a small blue reflector provide a warmer hue to the light.
PH revolutionized the way of thinking the lamp by both shielding the light and directing it to where it is needed. He worked scientifically, and the clear light sources made it easy to calculate the rays of light and adjust the screens so that the light never came directly and unreflected out of the lamp.
The PH 5, with its five visible screens, became a happy further development of the three-screen lamps and combined the good, downward light with the top-screen room-illuminating properties. To achieve his ideal of the glare-free light in PH 5, Poul Henningsen had added the two smaller screens to prevent light rays from coming out of the lamp unreflected.
PH had noticed that the light of the incandescent lamp was yellow, which he compensated for in PH 5 by painting the inner parts in red and blue shades. This finesse does not affect the color of the exterior of the screen, as it is only the colors on the inside of the lamp housing that affect the hue of the light.
