Wijnandus (Wijnand) Adrianus Matheus van Lieshout (Tilburg, 1940) studied art in Tilburg, Maastricht and Antwerp. Initially he mainly made paintings, but at the beginning of the seventies he started to focus on the production of installations which he then photographed. With this staged photography, Van Lieshout became one of the top performers in the Netherlands. Because of his collecting drive, his house and various warehouses were filled with curiosities. Van Lieshout processes these things in bizarre and poetic still lifes about eroticism, decay, war, decadence and other provocative themes. Photography has given way to more tangible compositions in chests and other viewing frames. Van Lieshout received several awards and was included in the authoritative lexicon ‘Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Fotografie’.
