Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) designed the covers until his death, while the text was accompanied by illustrations by his successor, Utagawa Kunisada II (1823 -1880), and Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889).
These are Kusazoshi, woodblock print books, small and thin books aimed at a popular audience.
The paper is thin and fragile, and the books usually have marks in the lower corners from moistened fingertips, and wormholes.
