Stick mask for the yams cult (1) - Wood - Yena - Nukuma - Washkuk, Papua New Guinea

Description
Stick mask for the yams cult (1) - Wood - Yena - Nukuma - Washkuk, Papua New Guinea
2nd half 20th century - Good

Exceptional expressive authentic stick mask for the yam cult from the Nukuma region, located in the Washkuk Hills at the upper Sepik in New Guinea. The piece is gorgeously painted with well-preserved natural colours and it is shaped like a yam bulb, which is really extraordinary.
Provenance: Ralf Stuttgen, Wewak. See also Christian Kaufmann’s publication on Yena, Minja and Nogwi ceremonies, which he has described in a very illustrative way in the brochure published by the Basel Museum of Ethnology.
