Meiji period choba dansu (merchants closet) with well hidden secret compartment. Fully restored with beautiful golden oak patina. With 8 drawers of different sizes, 2 sliding doors and one hinged door. Behind this door 2 drawers. Behind the top drawer there is a hidden compartment.
These chests were used by chōnin (merchants) on the choba (raised platform area of a shop) to store daifukucho (account books) and related business materials (Wikipedia).
With all original hardware.
When shipped we will add a certificate of origin. We acquired this piece in the city Otsu, a city at Biwa lake - not to far from Kyoto.
