1st half 20th century - Excellent

The Kore initiation is the phase intended to build at the individual level and at group level, the male identity.

Every 7 years a phase is ‘killed in the Kore’.
By this pseudo sacrifice, young men prove their courage, because obviously nobody informs them that it is a simulation.

When they are reborn under the adult identity, they must give up their childhood’s privileges...
From page 198 of Bamana/Rietberg/Zurich.

The Korè has six societies of initiation. The last, allowing access to the highest rank carries the name of Korè.

This type of zoomorphic face mask with pointed ears features a characteristic and very geometric structure typical of the Kore.

It belongs to the class of the Kore Dugaw, either the class of ‘vultures’ or ‘horses’ whose members cross the village riding a horse headed stick.

Their exhibition had no limits: they parodied some sexual behaviours, breaking tools and swallowing everything at hand, even excrement.
