Pelé was chosen as the ‘best footballer of the 20th century’ by FIFA (in a vote among the members of the Football Committee of that institution and the subscribers of the FIFA magazine in 2000), by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics and in a vote among the winners of the Ballon d’Or. In 1999 the International Olympic Committee awarded him the title of ‘best athlete of the 20th century’.

With the Brazil national team he won the FIFA World Cups of 1958, 1962 and 1970. He began his professional career in Santos and spent most of his career there. This team became one of the best in the world while he played there.
With this team he won ten Campeonato Paulista, three Torneio Rio-São Paulo, six Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, two Copa Libertadores, two Intercontinental Cups and the Intercontinental Champions' Supercup. At the end of his career, he played for the New York Cosmos in the defunct NASL.

He is the top scorer of the Brazil national team and Santos, with 77 and 474 goals respectively. In his career he scored 760 official goals, 541 in league championships.
