Karikpo Antelope Mask, Ogoni Culture, Nigeria. Height: 69 cm.
Magnificent large Ogoni Dance Mask from Nigeria, representing an antelope. The sculptor knew how to breathe life into his piece, the face is radiating. The volumes are harmonious, the whole is well-proportioned. The mask is covered with several layers of paint. Wonderful ancient patina attesting of the piece’s age. The wood is light and well-oxidised. On the circumference, there are some remaining vegetable fibres, part of the elements enabling to tie the mask. A beautiful ancient and authentic piece of collection with a lot of charm. Around 1940.
