Description
Demon mask (1) - Wood - Savi - Tambanum, Central Sepik, Papua New Guinea
2nd half 20th century - Good

Savi masks are famous for their tongues. The tongue protruding from the mouth is a sign of aggression against enemies of their clan and a form of protection against black magic. In this case, the tongue is in the shape of a crocodile, and represents an ancestor or clan spirit.

The crocodile has a minor imperfection (see photo).
