Jan Mankes (1889 - 1920) - Koemelkster
woodcut print - Plate signed - 1914 / 1927

Framed woodcut print from the girl who milks cows, made by Jan Mankes (1889-1920) in 1914. This is a later print, signed in the plate with monogram. This woodcut was published in 1927 by J.A.A.M. van Es - Wassenaar.

A great Dutch master artist, who unfortunately only turned 31 years old. His entire oeuvre, created between 1907 and 1918, includes about 150 paintings, mostly in small sizes, some 100 drawings and more than 40 sheets of graphics, mainly etchings and woodcuts.

After his death, several exhibitions and books and catalogues were published. Between 1923 and 1928, a number of luxuriously bound books with "loose" heliogravures of his hand/work were published in small edition, in collaboration with his wife Anne Zernike-Mankes and Roland Holst and Van Es-Wassenaar. This heliogravure was part of the publication in 1928.

Mankes already became famous during his life and that never really went away.
Wonderful exhibition about Mankes with much of his graphic art and background now also in Museum Mohlmann in Appingedam.

The woodcut print is in good condition. There is a faint line in the centre (length-wise), but it is almost invisible after the framing. The work was detached from the original page, because there was "rust" formation. The work now has an acid-free paper as a back page where it is only attached to the dots.

Comes in old wooden frame (with signs of wear), with new double mat.
I think it can go on the wall immediately!
The photos were taken without glass for a better view. Offered with glass and suspension on the back.

Words by Roland Holst about Jan Mankes of the time:

Mankes possessed a wisdom, which is often the youth's own, if it lives on the border of death.
He was aware of his clean limitations. He knew how far his gifts could carry him. He never made a mistake in that, either. So he achieved his happiness only on this wonderfully attainment - the countries, where all emotion transcends a world and every recognition is a liberation.

Will be carefully packaged and sent worldwide with track and trace.
