Carlos Sempere: The painter of Picos de Europa
In order to paint snow you have to feel the cold, not only under your feet but also in all your body. Your fingers have to vibrate, you have to perceive how the brush slips between them sink on the ice like an ice axe. In order to paint it you have to have walked on it, loved it, fallen in love with it and even deceived it. In order to feel it you have to betray yourself, risk your life at 2,400 meters of altitude with a a marked card that she knows and that you have to risk playing. In order to paint snow live with it, eat it, bite it, undo it with your mouth, caress it with your hands, let it fall on your body and make it your own, be yourself part of it, do not let her notice that you have been there, do not let her feel that you are gone'.
This is the extraordinary description that the painter Carlos Sempere makes of his artistic experiences during his journeys through the Picos de Europa to paint live the breathtaking landscapes that they treasure.
Carlos Sempere (Alcoy, 1958) has in his biography legendary touches that captivate us due to their his artistic vocation, restlessness, courage and love of nature. Like his sudden and unexpected decision to go live and paint in the Picos de Europa, after contemplating at a friend’s house a postcard of such a land, so suggestive and attractive as different from his own, Mediterranean, luminous and warm.
And said and done, there he went in his van - a traveling home - to discover it and to succeed in it with a work that defines him as the painter who is the ambassador of the most beautiful area of Spain, an area that he immediately felt as his own.
Almost twenty years, day by day, season by season, living and feeling the climate and colour changes; tireless, walking, discovering, capturing and painting a wonderful natural world. From the greenery of the forests and the flowery meadows, to the sapwood of the clouds; from the freshness of the breeze, to the icy murmur of the gale; from the splendid, clean clouds and shimmering sunset to the intermittent mist, to the perennial, stormy grey of the overcast sky and the snow layer that covers the high peaks in white and clean, stiff with cold, softened by the dreadful roar of the wind.
Narrow gorges, turbulent rivers that descend impetuously from the heights to calm down on the landings and the high plains; beautiful meadows, where cows and sheep graze, atmospheres and effects of light on the elements of the landscape that the artist, with attentive and passionate gaze, has captured and embodied with mastery through his rich palette.
Carlos Sempere, specialized in the landscape of the Picos de Europa is the last painter to tour and paint them, both on the Asturian slope and in the Leon or Cantabria one. To this we must add its creative work in the Alps; its catalogues also include paintings from Mont Blanc, Switzerland and the French central and eastern massif.
