A unique and rare nineteenth-century work by Agazzi, dated between 1880 and 1890.
The Verist influence here merges with the unspeakable inner turmoil that took him briefly to a psychiatric hospital; the result is a very unique portrait, tender and melancholy at the same time, where dark tones prevail, at times almost spectral. Kind details such as the celestial eye, the barely-there smile and the bouquet of flowers mitigate the dark, perhaps involuntary, of the composition.
A painting very different from the subsequent 20th century portraits that would have favoured neutral backgrounds and often bright and semi-nude girls.
Restorations emerged under Wood’s lamp.
