Jan Wittenberg was a pupil of Floris Arntzenius and of the Academy in the Hague. He made fine, calmly painted still lifes, children and animals, and a single landscape. His compositions consist of simple objects. In simplicity and details, his work reminds of the works by Jan Mankes. Wittenberg also made many graphic designs and woodcarvings.
Winner of the prize: "Royal subsidy for painting".
Was a teacher at the Academy of fine arts (Rotterdam).
