Dirk Harting (1884-1970) was almost exclusively a graphic artist and clever etcher.
He also engraved stamps and exlibris, made lithographs and drawings and a single watercolour as well as paintings in oil paint. In the Dutch graph tradition Harting reached great heights. His adage was: "I want an etching to also be a print and not a covert painting or an imitation of a watercolour". His etchings provide us the artistry of the métier himself, his personal vision of reality. For the etching of the Grimnesse lock in Amsterdam near the Rokin Harting won the Willink van Collen price in 1913. Five years later, he acquired a silver medal of the city of Utrecht for his well-known etching of the Amerfoorte O.L. Vrouwekerk.
He was a student of Pieter Dupont and Willem Witsen.
