The Vicenza stone was formed between the Eocene and Oligocene, following both the collapse of the coral reef and the deposit of shells and residues of shells, crustaceans, algae, and other sea organisms on the bottom of the warm tropical sea, which was present in this area at the time. The crushing resulting from the wave motion, and the pressure generated by the accumulation of the layers on top of each other which mingled with sand, created a compacting of this heterogeneous whole, which increased especially after the withdrawal of sea waters. The result consists of layers a few hundred metres thick, which today is defined as soft stone.
It’s obtained from quarries present in various areas of the Berici hills; it’s known and used since the times of the Roman, who used it both for architectural decorative elements and for sculptures. It’s also famous for being used and described in details by Palladio in the 16th century.
