His name was associated to Nancy and Saint-Étienne teams, becoming the iconic player of both clubs, as well as Juventus and the French national team, of which he was among the main authors of their respective successes in the 1980s. His career ended at the age of 32, after having won many trophies including a French championship, two Italian championships and almost all the confederal competitions of that period, becoming at the same time a Serie A scorer. With the transalpine national team he won the European championship in 1984, where he also excelled in the goalscorers’ list with nine goals, and third place in the 1986 World Cup.

He won three consecutive Golden Balls awarded by France Football and was recognised by many professionals among the best ten football players of the twentieth century. In 2004 he was included by Pelé in the FIFA 100, the list of the 125 greatest living footballers. In 2002 he was also included in the FIFA World Cup Dream Team, a selection made up of the best eleven players in the history of the World Cup.

In his long career as a footballer, in which he played over 650 matches between clubs and the national team, he was never sent off the field: this is an exceptional thing, considering the competitive spirit and the aggressiveness of the marking against the most creative players, between the 1970s and the 1980s.
