The ammonite is the fossil of an extinct mollusc species of the cephalopod species.
The discovered fossils date from a period from Devonian (400 million years ago) until the mass extinction in the Cretaceous Paleogene (66 million years ago).
The inner shape of the fossil is a spiral with different chambers that grow from the centre. These were connected by a small pipe that passed through them, which the animal used to fill and empty the chambers with water to travel up or down in the sea. The animal's body lived only in the last chamber.
