Pol Dom (1885-1978) - Hoorn no 15

Pol Dom (1885-1978) - Hoorn no 15
Etching - Hand signed - 1e helft 20e eeuw

Pol Dom was born as Paul Ludovicus Carolus Dom in Antwerp, where he went to study at the royal academy of fine arts after his elementary and secondary education. In 1906, he participated in the competition of the Prize of Rome for engraving and received an honourable mention (3rd prize). Because of the more open art climate in the Netherlands, he settled for some years in the Netherlands in 1909 only to settle in The Hague after the First World War. Around 1920, his address was Koninginnelaan 51 in Rijswijk.[1] In 1948, he married Flora van Dam, the widow of Albert Louis Oger, in The Hague. Dom was a versatile artist. He practised painting and was a graphic artist, political draughtsman and portrait painter. His style can be characterised as naturalistic.
His work as an illustrator and book binding designer is visible, amongst others, in the renowned children’s books ‘Kruimeltje’ from 1923 by Chris van Abkoude and ‘De Kameleon’ by Hotze de Roos (1949). Dom illustrated hundreds of books, especially youth books, between 1917 and 1956.
