African Kota Reliquary from Gabon
The weight of the stand is included.
The height measures 37.5 cm + 3 mm with the stand.
The Kota people mainly live in the east of Gabon and in the west of the D.R Congo.
There are many Kota reliquary figurines. These have common characteristics, a face crafted with metal sheets, plated on wood core, and a handle in the shape of a diamond.
Reliquary or "Bwété” baskets were stored in the backside of the chief's hut. The “Bwété” were worshipped with offerings and prayers which aim was to bring prosperity to the clan. On the summit of the “Bwété”, a reliquary figurine was placed with a highly stylised diamond-shaped body and a head covered with metal.
