Hajime Sorayama (空山基 Sorayama Hajime - 22 February 1947) is a Japanese artist and illustrator.
He attended the Imabari Kita high school. In 1965 he was admitted to the Shikoku Gakuin university faculty, where he studied English and Greek literature for a year and a half.
In 1967 he attended the Chuo School of Art in Tokyo, where he learned the basics for his future career as an illustrator. He graduated two years later, at the age of 22, and got a job in an advertising agency.
His subjects are very different and he mainly uses pencils, pens, coloured markers and rarely the airbrush. In 1972 he became a freelance illustrator.
Mainly known for his typical robot women in suggestive poses, in the style of pin-ups, he is also active in other fields. Between 2000 and 2012 he collaborated with Sony on the design of the Aibo prototype, obtaining the Japan’s Grand Prize, the most important design award in Japan, and the permanent exhibition at MOMA and at the Smithsonian Institute Museum. He is also part of a group of 25 Japanese artists for Nike’s White Dunk Project.
His works can also be found in cinema, in the films: Splatters - Braindead (1992), Timecop (1994), Space Truckers (1996), Nightwatch and Spawn (1997), and music, on the cover of the Aerosmith’s album Just Push Play (2001).
