United Kingdom - Pistolet a coffre - arme de défense - Percussion - marine weapon - 18 mm
Fair - 1830 - Barrel is Smoothbore

Chest pistol, also called ‘coup de poing’, made in England, in a box. The weapon is small in size but has a very large calibre, that is almost never encountered in this type of weapon. The weapon is in a mahogany box, with its accessories: bullet mould and capsule box. The tiny powder flask is unfortunately lost. The weapon works correctly, the bullet mould is functional. The box is made of solid mahogany sheathed in wine-coloured woollen cloth that is typical in productions for the navy, with its very characteristic closing hooks. On-board watches, sextants, logs and other precious instruments were stored in similar boxes. This very large calibre pistol is intended to impress and is probably the personal weapon of a navy merchant officer, carried in the pocket of his oilskin, during trips to land in often ill-reputed ports. This specimen has been used and repaired at some time, the pistol as well as the box.
