History, Literature - Quantity: 1 - Book

Half parchment and marbled paper binding, early 20th century, gold title on a red tag on the spine, red edges. Cover page with title and rich engraved heraldic illustration, coloured with watercolours in the past and embossed in gold, including the 16th-century coat of arms of the Este, surrounded by the coats of arms attributed to the most illustrious exponents of the family; 6 unnumbered pages of dedication, 660 numbered pages; 8 unnumbered pages, of which the last is blank, for the family tree of the Estensi starting from the supposed forefather Caio Atio "Decurio, & Principe Atestis” (who lived at the beginning of the fifth century AD) until the descendants of the mid-16th century; 82 unnumbered pages for Catalogus and Index. Illustrated and historiated drop caps, as well as woodcut typographic friezes. The book is the rare second edition of an important monograph dedicated to the lords of Ferrara, who established themselves as warriors and, especially in the Renaissance, as protectors of poetry and the arts. The text, with an openly celebratory tone, ranges from the fabulous origins of the family (placed at the time of the "rivolutione del Romano Imperio") until 1476. The first edition of the book was imprinted in the Este capital in 1570, in-folio, by Rossi and with text in Italian; another followed in 1572, the third, first with Latin text, is the one under consideration. A copy in excellent condition; crisp interior with particularly strong paper, slight stain to pp. 106-107, some rare sheet with traces of oxidation.
