Multatuli - Originele foto - 1892
Literature, Photography - Quantity: 1 - Single sheet

MULTATULI Original photo. 13.7 x 10.1 cm. On cardboard with frame and signature of Multatuli in facsimile (24.5 x 16.8 cm). [1892?]. Tear in right side of the cardboard, right edge and top edge discoloured.

This photo most closely resembles a photograph of a drawing to the right portrait printed on page 70 in Willem Frederik Hermans' The Enigmatic Multatuli (Amsterdam 1976). It would be an apocrypha by a portrait of youth and according to Hermans it was held for 'the failed portrait from 1860'. Du Perron also wrote about this photo: 'Probably a portrait signed by Overman, in the commemorative issue of The Dawn in 1892, which Mimi stated that she could not recognize Multatuli from it. It depicts a sweet man with blond pointy beard, and Mimi distrusts its composition as much as the angular signature underneath. This questionable image was later marketed as a photograph and reproduced several times as a 'portrait from the time when the Havelaar was written', which seems even less accurate than 'youth portrait'' (Collected work, part 4, p. 32).
