An ivory "paper knife" or popularly called "page turner". In Louise Seize style.
A debate has been going on for years whether these kinds of beautiful objects are page turners or letter openers. Both are not officially the case, this is a paper knife. They were sold in different materials (silver, gold, ivory, tortoiseshell etc.)
The purpose of a paper knife is to cut open the books that were just bound, often in the 19th century the pages were still stuck together and with this object you could take them apart.
They are collected frequently.
This object is made of ivory and comes with a certificate. The certificate has been issued by Mr. A Keddeman. Appraiser has physically seen the object and has applied the material and dates. (Certificate: 1295)
