Tosca van den Haak - Animal Plastic - Marsupial - Clay
Netherlands - 1970-1979

In good vintage condition, a wonderful handmade chamotte clay figurine, an animal sculpture by Tosca van den Haak (1918-2012). It is likely depicting a marsupial, in this case a wombat. It is quite difficult to find work by her online, it is hardly/not available for sale. Museum Noordwijk has a large collection.

Dimensions: 13.5 x 25 x 8 cm.
The wombat weighs 2.7 kilograms.

Background information:
Tosca van den Haak (1918-2012) clearly preferred to create animal sculptures. She first sculpted the animals with the use of coarse chamotte. In the beginning, the animals were small. Otherwise they would not fit in the oven. Later on, when Tosca also started to work with wax and cast the sculptures in bronze, the sculptures increased in size.

She was inspired by nature in Noordwijk (The Netherlands), such as the beach and the dunes. She always carried a sketchbook and pen, so that nothing could elude her. Tosca viewed the animals with a special perspective in order to capture the essence of the animals to be ultimately able to give character to a rough lump of clay.

One could say that she was one of the first artists in The Netherlands who specialised in animal sculptures. A lot of her work can be found in Museum Noordwijk.

The condition is in accordance with age and use. A few minor fleebites, chips on the clay, scratches and small stains, though not disturbing the overall presentation. Please see the photo with the red arrows.
