The basket weaving (called nattè from the French natter meaning braiding) or Panama (because it resembles the twine that characterises the Panama hat) is a fabric derived from plain weave. Its name, which comes from French, means basket.
It is created by expanding the same amount of warp and weft threads, so that bundles of warps threads are raised to allow an equal number of weft threads to go underneath, resulting in a squared effect, similar to a basket. In the example, a basketweave is obtained by doubling the threads, but the expansion may be greater, with groups of three, four or more threads. Obviously, the higher is the expansion, the smaller is the stability of the fabric, inversely proportional to the length of both weft and warp variations. Reversible fabric, i.e. with the front having the same look as the back.
