Old and extremely weathered fragment of a roof top carving depicting a face and a bird on the top. Used as finial element to seal the thatched roof of the Timorese hut. These kind of roof top carvings are still present in some areas of Timor and have apotropaic function among Atoni people, protecting the household from calamities, accidents, bad events and maleficient spirits.
Obtained from local dealer in Atoni area, South Central Timor.
The last 3 pictures show a similar rooftop that I have found in situ, still installed on the traditional hut,
