Mural painting - Fresco fragment
Dating / style / typology: 19th century
Important museum-worthy fresco.
In this important fresco of the Tuscan school, the young martyred man does not express any pain, but a vague melancholy in his dreamy gaze, with an elegant, carefully balanced posture. The background is dominated by a distant mountainscape. The saint stands in the foreground in the centre of the painting, creating a strongly symmetrical and meaningful composition. The fresco provides us with a stunning synthesis of the tradition of Italian mural painting.
A work of great pictorial quality, depicting a very well constructed scene. In good state of preservation.
Dimensions: 88/60 cm
Origin: RVC Restauri
Italian detached fresco from a Tuscan pictorial cycle
Some restorative conservation and integration work has been performed - in good condition - ready to be hung on the wall
In the 1960s-80s, frescoes like this were detached from the walls. A real revolution in the field of restoration and conservation, but also for the collectors of Italian mural heritage. So, while in the newly rediscovered Herculaneum and Pompeii the most beautiful murals of ancient times were transferred to new supports, in the rest of Italy the revolution of detaching frescoes was spreading.
Nothing would ever be the same again. From that moment on, and until the end of the 19th century, a considerable number of Italian painting masterpieces were torn and detached from the vaults of churches and chapels and from the walls of public and private palaces where they stood for centuries to be transferred to safer places, into noble and princely picture galleries of Italy and Europe. Collection purposes were often hidden behind the official preservative reasons.
Free circulation, without restrictions or limitations.
The work will be delivered with a document/brochure “La storia degli strappi di affresco”.
