Giovanni Bertini. The son of Giovanni Battista, along with his brother Pompeo followed in his father’s footsteps. Above all, he devoted himself to painting, following the style of F.Hayez and teaching for several years at the Brera Academy. He made frescoes for churches and palaces in Milan and very good portraits; he was a good restorer and art connoisseur. He directed the Poldi-Pezzoli Museum and the gallery of Brera. Giuseppe Bertini was the son of Giovanni Battista, a well-known stained glass painter who made, among others, the windows of the apse of the Milan Cathedral. He was only 13 years old when he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Brera, Milan. At the same time, he was helping his father in the family business. He made, among others, the cathedral glass depicting St Vittore on horseback, in the Varese Basilica, and the stained glass windows of the Cathedral facade in Milan. He was a disciple of Luigi Sabatelli and Giuseppe Bisi (the husband of paintress Ernesta Legnani Bisi). In 1845, he won the Gran Premio of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts with the painting "L'incontro di Dante e frate Ilario".
He had the opportunity of visiting Venice, Florence and Rome on various occasions, remaining enthralled by ancient art, especially Renaissance's. Thanks to his knowledge of Renaissance, he became the first artistic adviser of his friend, the noble Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli. The latter appointed him in his will to become the first director of the Museum Poldi Pezzoli, founded in Milan by Gian Giacomo himself in his family palace. The Museum inauguration took place in 1881. In 1851, Bertini also created the stained glass windows of Poldi-Pezzoli’s apartment, which remain to this very day in their original location. He restored the stained glass windows of the Milan Cathedral, a work that took several years.
