A rare and evocative painting depicting the Virgin Mary caught in an intense melancholic expression. Our Lady of Sorrow is looking at the "Arma Christi" which, in the Christian tradition, are the objects used for the martyrdom and crucifixion of Christ, crown of thorns, the robe of mockery, the dice with which the soldiers cast lots for Christ's seamless robe, the holy sponge soaked with vinegar, the glove that struck the face of Jesus during the mockery, the nails used for the crucifixion, the Lance of Longinus that pierced the side of Jesus as he hung on the cross and the scourge that wounded His Flesh.
The craquelure is consistent with the estimated date. The Wood’s lamp does not show any significant touch ups; we recommend an accurate cleaning and some conservation work.
The work comes from a private collection with certification according to the art.64 D.L. 22/Gennaio/2004 no.42 Codice dei Beni Culturali (Italy)
